The Mean-ing of America™

What Does "Mean-ing" Mean?

Mean:

(Oxford) a. 1. Not generous. 2. Ignoble; small-minded. 3. (of a person’s capacity, understanding, etc.) inferior; poor. 4. Malicious; ill-tempered. 5. Vicious or aggressive. 6. (colloquial) ashamed.

(Roget’s) a. 1. NASTY, unpleasant, obnoxious, cruel, vicious, hurtful, rude, malicious, rotten, rough, sour, unkind, contemptible, hostile, insulting, petty, ignoble, spiteful, brutal. 2. STINGY miserly, cheap, penny-pinching, ungenerous, tight, parsimonious, grudging. 3. POOR shabby, low, second-rate, humble, modest, squalid, paltry, mediocre, menial, small.

"Four score and seven years ago," said Abraham Lincoln, "our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal." That was the vision. What has become of the dream?

The present reality in America lacks both full liberty and full equality. Since WW II, which Americans will tell you they won, the USA has become increasingly ignoble, ill-tempered, aggressive, rude, petty, parsimonious, immodest, increasingly mediocre, and is rapidly becoming a second-rate economy not long to be eclipsed by the economies of India, and more significantly, China a clearly non-democratic nation. Even the name “America” smacks of an arrogance that denies the reality of nations both north and south of which the United States seems to forget are also "of America."

What other nations on this planet would call the final match of its national sport The World Series for so long played only among baseball teams of the United States. Perhaps, when the Canadian Toronto Blue Jays won back-to-back matches in 1992 and 1993, the title “World Series” may have been a bit more meaningful. Even then, there were only two countries involved out of the roughly 190 in the world.[1] Moreover, they represented only the “North” of the Americas. There are another 12 countries in South America[2] and at least 3 dependencies.[3]

Today, the once exemplary nation in the Southern portion of North America, is revealing its cultural decline with an election pending in which both candidates are disliked, mistrusted, and disdained by the majority of U.S. citizens. Where are the ethical leaders? Where are the Lincolns, the Rosa Parks, the John F. Kennedys? Where is the trust? Clearly, on its political front at least, the U.S. of A. has hit near rock bottom.

Can the world handle the next four years that will follow the November Presidential Election which will elect either Hilary Clinton (who allegedly has put U.S. citizens at risk with her neglectful handling of secret documents via cell phone) or Donald Trump.(who will build a great wall, deport millions of residents, and deal with the rest of the world from an infantile "Me first" mindset)? Will liberty survive? Will "equality for all" ever be a reality in "America"?

[1] Numbers vary according to source and date. The US State Department currently recognizes 194 independent countries around the world, but that list of countries reflects the political agenda of the United States of America. As an example, it includes Kosovo, but does not include Taiwan, as China claims that Taiwan (the ROC) is simply a province of China. http://www.worldatlas.com/nations.htm.
